The University of Ghana has taken a proactive step to resource the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) when it becomes operational.

A brief send off-ceremony took place for the first batch of 21 medical doctors prior to their departure to the Sheba Medical Centre in Israel for training and to acquire the requisite skills.

Addressing the doctors, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ernest Aryeetey urged them to see themselves as pioneers, as they would return to become the first medical staff to run the hospital.  He advised them to willingly transfer the knowledge gained during the training period when the hospital starts operating and also adapt to the changing times and technologies.

The Project Coordinator of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Professor Aaron Lawson gave a brief summary of the project. He recalled the sod-cutting performed by the Late President John Evans Atta Mills in March 2012, which led to the start of the project. He noted that the Medical Centre is being financed by a 217 million US dollar Government of Ghana loan from the Israeli government. He hinted that so far the overall progress of the project is 57% and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

Professor Aaron Lawson noted that a total of 26 doctors, 30 nurses and biomedical and mechanical engineers are also expected to have hands-on training at Sheba Medical Centre in Israel, adding that the 21 doctors are expected to be integrated into the Sheba system as Senior Staff. He said they are expected to participate in all activities of the Sheba Medical Centre, such as teaching, research, providing medical services, and thereafter transfer their newly acquired skills to help in the development of UGMC.

Present at the ceremony was Dr. Samuel Asiamah, Head of Medical Affairs at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, who entreated the doctors to offer their best during the period of training.

On behalf of the doctors, Dr. Matthew Yamoah Kyei expressed gratitude to the University for the opportunity and gave the assurance that they would make the university proud by putting into practice what they would learn during the period of training.

Present at the ceremony were the Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Prof. S. Kwame Offei (Academic and Student Affairs) and Prof. John O. Gyapong (Research, Innovation and Development).
