International Association of Universities (IAU) Expert Panel Reviews Internationalization at the University of Ghana

Prof. Kwame Offei, Pro-Vice-Chancellor in Charge of Academic and Student Affairs

A delegation from the International Association of Universities (IAU) International Strategy Advisory Service (ISAS) Expert Panel on Internationalization has visited the University of Ghana. The purpose of the visit is to review a self-study on internationalization undertaken by the University of Ghana Institutional Steering Committee for the Review of Internationalization Strategies and Processes (UGISC) as well as deliberate with key stakeholders on salient issues regarding the University’s aspiration to meet global standards and become a world-class institution.

As part of the visit, the delegation met with senior officials of the University. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Kwame Offei, on behalf of the Vice- Chancellor welcomed them to the University. He expressed the hope that they will use their extensive experience to support the establishment of an Internationalization strategy for the University.

Members of the Panel touched on a wide range of  issues, including internationalization of the University’s curriculum, mobility of staff and students, problems of “poaching” and brain drain of brilliant students who are given the opportunity to study abroad, research collaboration, improvement of facilities and translating recommendations and policies into actual structures and action.

Present at the meeting were, the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia; Provost, College of Education ,Rev. Prof. Cephas Omenyo; Provost College of Humanities, Prof. Samuel Agyei- Mensah; Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Science (CBAS), Prof. Ebenezer O. Owusu; Dean of International Programmes, Prof. Naa Ayikailey Adamafio; Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella Amoa; the Director of the Institute for Environmental and Sanitation Studies,(IESS) and Chair, UGISC), Prof Chris Gordon and Senior Assistant Registrar, Teaching and Exams Unit and Secretary, UGISC,Mrs. Lydia A. Nyako-Danquah. The Panel from the IAU is made up of Prof. Leapestwe Malete (University of Botswana), Prof. Donna Scarboro (George Washington University), Dr.Anna Glass (OECD, France) and Giorgio Marinoni (IAU, France).

As part of the Panel’s visit, they met with various internal and external stakeholders of the University of Ghana to seek their perspectives on the University’s internationalization. They will also contribute at a joint Internationalization Workshop organized by the University of Ghana and University of Cape Coast Steering Committees on 30th April 2015 in Cape Coast.
