Jean Nelson Aka Hall Launch Hall Cloth

Jean Nelson Aka Hall recently launched its Hall Cloth at a brief ceremony recently during the Hall’s week celebration on 10th of October, 2014.   The launch was performed by Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, Director of Public Affairs.

In her remarks, she said the Hall had made considerable progress in its development and commended the Hall for maintaining a pristine environment inspite of the many challenges.  She recounted the many contributions alumnus Jean Nelson Aka had made to the University and said it was a befitting honour to his memory that the University decided to name a residential facility after him.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Warden of the Hall, Dr. (Mrs). Angelina O. Danquah said that Jean Nelson Aka Hall was the first among the four new Halls to have both the Hall Logo and Hall Cloth approved by the University.  She was thankful to the University, the Senior Tutor, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu, tutors, the JCR, staff and students as well as friends of the Hall for the hard work in ensuring the high environmental standards at the Hall.

Mr. Prince Antwi, President of Jean Nelson Aka Hall Junior Common Room (JCR) reiterated the sentiments expressed by the Warden and said members of the JCR members were desirous to make the Hall stand out among other halls on Campus.   He noted that the JCR had installed ceiling fans in all the rooms which he said was a major contribution from students.  

In brief remarks Dr. Christiana Amoatey, Chairperson of the Hall Cloth Committee, said she was thankful to the Almighty God for how far He has brought the Hall and hoped for more development to take place in the Hall to affirm the Hall’s Motto “LUX IN TENEBRIS” meaning ‘LIGHT IN DARKNESS.’

Jean Nelson Aka Hall is one of the four new Halls of residence located on the southern part of the Legon Campus off the road to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.  The Hall was named after the late Dr. Jean Nelson Aka, distinguished alumnus of the University.

The Hall was inaugurated on July 8, 2011 by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey and students moved into residence during the 2011/2012 academic year.  The Hall has 430 self-contained rooms capable of accommodating 1700 students.  Currently the Hall is being operated and managed by the University of Ghana and functioning as a full-fledged mixed hall of residence for undergraduates, postgraduates and foreign students.
