School of Public Health Honours Past Directors and Deans

The School of Public Health (SPH) has organized a ceremony to honour past Directors and Deans for their commitment, hard work and distinguished services to the growth and development of SPH and the University of Ghana. 

In a welcome address, Prof. Kwasi Torpey, Dean, SPH, expressed gratitude to the heroes who have contributed immensely to SPH and to the members of the planning committee. He indicated that the School will expand its system of recognition in subsequent years to cover all departments. 

The Special Guest of Honour, Prof. Gordon Awandare, Pro-Vice- Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, in his remarks, appreciated the opportunity to join the celebration and noted that the heroes should be celebrated at the national level due to their contributions to public health in Ghana. 

He mentioned that the growth of the School has been tremendous in less than 30 years , primarily as a result of the good leadership over the years.

All the past Deans were presented with a citation embossed with a message of appreciation, to constantly remind them of the School of Public Health’s appreciation of their outstanding services. 

Past Directors and Deans of the School of Public Health who were honored included Prof. Samuel Ofosu-Amaah, Founding Director (1994-2000); Dr. Frederick Wurapa, Acting Director (2001- 2022); Emerita Prof. Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi, Director (2002- 2006) and Dean (2006 - 2007); Prof. Fred Newton Binka, Dean (2007-2012); Prof. Richard Adanu, Dean (2012- 2018); Rev. Prof. Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, Acting Dean (2018-2019) and Prof. Julius Najah Fobil, Dean (2019-2021). 

The other awardees are Dr. Deda Ogum Alangea, best female faculty; Dr. Justice M. Aheto best male faculty; Mr. Joseph Aidoo, best senior member, non-academic; Mrs. Hannah Agbodza, best senior staff and Ms. Cynthia Asibi best junior staff.  

In separate remarks, the past Directors and Deans expressed appreciation and excitement at the honour done them.
