University Basic School Holds Tree Planting Exercise

The University Basic School (UBS), as part of their contribution to the 75th Anniversary celebration of the University, has embarked on a tree-planting exercise within the School and on various parts of campus. The event which saw the planting of 400 seedings, made up of a variety of fruit seedlings and windbreakers, was held with support from Titans of Africa, the Beyond the Return Secretariat and AFSL. 

Prior to the exercise, a formal event took place on the Mensah Sarbah field.

  

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Research, Innovation and Development, Professor Felix Ankomah Asante, applauded the UBS and its sponsors for taking the initiative to plant trees to protect the environment. “Global warming and associated challenges have engaged the attention of the world, the world is seriously racing against time to combat this phenomenon that is threatening the survival of humanity. It is, therefore, heart-warming that the University Basic School and its sponsors have embarked on this worthy course,” Prof. Asante said. He saluted those who conceived the idea to plant trees and all whose contributions occasioned the day. 

The Chairperson for the programme and Registrar of the University, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, in her speech, expressed delight that the students of UBS were taking part in activities to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the University. She encouraged them to continue with projects such as these to improve the greenery of the University.  

The Director of the Beyond the Return Secretariat, Annabelle Mckenzie who made brief remarks at the event, expressed pleasure at being part of the exercise.  

Mr. Mohammed Osman Nkosi, President of Football Operations at Titans of Africa, noted that his organisation was hopeful that that the pupils at the Basic School, will understand the importance of the exercise. He intimated that Titans of Africa was making efforts at accomplishing SDG Goal 13 which seeks to take urgent actions to combat climate change and its impact.  

Also present at the tree planting exercise was the Co-Chair of the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Prof. Clement Appah, who charged the Management of the UBS to ensure the plants do not wither and die but will grow up beautifully, such that in 25 years time when the University is 100 years old, the pupils can recount planting the trees and how that helped improve the greenery on campus.  

The event was interspersed with dance performances by the UBS Dance teams and a poetry recital by Ms. Liya Hagan. Other members of the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Directors, pupils of UBS and friends of the University were in attendance.
