University of Ghana Alumni Association of North America Donates 10 Laptops to 1S1L Initiative

The University of Ghana Alumni Association of North America (UGAANA) has generously contributed to the ongoing One Student One Laptop Initiative (1S1L) by donating 10 laptops. The laptops were formally presented to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo during a brief meeting held at the New Council Chamber of the University.

Prof. Ernest Y. Tweneboah-Koduah, who doubled up as a representative of the 1S1L Committee and a spokesperson for the donors, conveyed the motivation behind the donation, citing a previous contribution by Dr. Akwasi Ampofo, a UGAANA member. During that earlier donation, an appeal was made to the association to further support the initiative.

Dr. Akwasi Ampofo, in his remarks, highlighted the inspiration drawn from a previous donation and emphasised how students have already benefited from the mobilisation of laptops. The donation, he stated, is a response to the Vice-Chancellor's call for increased support to ensure broader access to digital tools for learning among UG students.

Dr. Ampofo commended the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership in driving the digitalisation agenda and pledged that the association would continue to provide more support to enhance the learning environment for students.

In response, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amfo expressed her excitement and appreciation for the donation, commending the association for its resource mobilisation efforts. She acknowledged the Association's active role in providing support to the University. Prof. Amfo mentioned plans to restock the various computer labs of the University to support the smooth conduct of online exams and other student-lecturer engagements.

She further outlined the comprehensive plan for the 1S1L initiative, including agreements with laptop vending companies to offer students hire purchase options and reduced rates. She recounted the focus of the initiative, which is to enhance the teaching and learning experience, ensuring students have their own laptops for research and assignments and making them digitally savvy for the job market.

The Vice-Chancellor shared updates on the classroom modernisation project as well as the Hot-spot Comfort Zones project and mentioned the inclusion of an assistive technology lab for students with special needs.

The donation ceremony was attended by Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Prof. Gordon Awandare, UG Alumnus, Nii Ashitey, Mr. Francis Boachie, Chief Information Technology Officer, Ms. Pascaline K. Songsore, Senior Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate, and Mrs. Sylvia Antwiwaah Sarbah, Senior Administrative Assistant at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
