University of Ghana and Federal University of Technology, Owerri Nigeria to form Academic Partnership

Prof. Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), has, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, received a delegation from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) Nigeria led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nnenna Oti. Both parties discussed potential collaborations in research, agriculture, alumni affairs and faculty exchanges.

Prof. Awandare, in welcoming the delegation to UG, presented a comprehensive overview of the University and highlighted the University's achievements in the past 75 years.

He mentioned the research work being carried out in the three World Bank Centres of Excellence, namely the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) and West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC). According to him, these centres are contributing to propel Africa to the top of the global rankings, while concluding that UG is open to mutually beneficial collaborations.

Prof. Awandare underscored the importance of establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial collaborations among African universities while leveraging existing relationships across African countries.

Prof. Nnenna Oti, Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, expressed her delight at visiting the University of Ghana campus for the second time and was thrilled by the University's progress over years. Prof. Oti also mentioned in her remarks that the main purpose of their visit was to learn how UG was leveraging on its alumni for the institution’s development. The visit was also intended to discuss areas of mutual interest, particularly research and innovation in agriculture and public health as well as ways of enhancing faculty exchanges.

The two institutions engaged in a general discussion on education on the African continent.

The Director of Finance at the University of Ghana, Mrs. Bernice B. Agudu, who was also at the meeting thanked the delegation for visiting the University. She expressed the hope for successful collaborations between the two universities.
